Haleigh Lives  (February 21, 2007)

A year ago, the doctors said that Haleigh Poutre was “virtually brain dead.”  They thought she was in a persistent vegetative state with no hope of recovery.  There were state orders to remove the girl’s feeding tube and ventilator.

Haleigh, who will soon be 13, was put into this condition after being burned and nearly beaten to death by her stepfather.   There seemed to be little hope as even most family members gave up on her.  But, then, something amazing happened.  Haleigh started to breath on her own.

A state agency has tried to keep improvements silent, but Haleigh’s grandmother reports that she can now write part of her name, eat scrambled eggs, and flex a muscle when she’s told she is strong.   Haleigh is very much alive!
