THANK GOV. JOHN KASICH IN ADVANCE
FOR SIGNING THE HEARTBEAT BILL INTO LAW
Janet (Folger) Porter 202-241-2ACT (2228)
December 12, 2016 - For Immediate Release
The Heartbeat Bill, which passed the Ohio Senate and House on December 6, 2016 (added to H.B. 493), is now awaiting the signature of Governor John Kasich.
"I urge everyone to call Governor Kasich at 614-466-3555 and thank him in advance for signing the Heartbeat Bill into law," said Janet (Folger) Porter of Faith2Action, author of the Heartbeat Bill and the driving force behind the six year battle for its passage.
"You remember what Gov. Kasich said in the Presidential Debate: 'If you save one life, it is as if you saved the world.' This is the opportunity for Gov. Kasich to save not just one life, but nearly 20,000 lives each year,"
"There's no reason for Governor Kasich to veto the Heartbeat Bill. Let the courts decide the question of constitutionality-that's why we have courts-and it won't cost taxpayers a dime," said Porter. "Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, former Dean of Liberty University School of Law, has offered to defend Ohio's Heartbeat Law for free."
"I can't imagine the Governor would want to kill the Heartbeat Bill because he fears the courts might--that makes about as much sense as killing someone because they 'might die,'" stated Porter.
"The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals asked the Supreme Court to review the issue because they determined 'heartbeat' to be a 'more certain and consistent' marker than viability, the standard they currently use," Porter explained. "According to Constitutional law expert, Professor David Forte, the bill's primary drafter, Ohio's Heartbeat Law presents the best opportunity for the Court to move the line of protection from viability to detectable heartbeat."
"And the good news is that by the time Ohio's Heartbeat Law reaches the high court, there will be brand new Trump-appointed justices to welcome it," said Lori Viars of Warren County Right to Life, who served as Grassroots Coordinator for the Heartbeat effort.
