| Majority in Ohio Make a Bad Gamble & Approve Casinos | | Print | |
|
After defeating similar proposals in the past, Ohio residents voted this time to approve the construction of casinos to be built in the state. Approximately 53% of those who cast ballots approved the constitutional amendment which will allow casinos to be built in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo. It has already been estimated that the average visitor to the casino being planned in Cincinnati will lose $80 per visit. Studies show that 5 out of 100 who enter a casino for the first time will develop a serious addiction. Such addictions will lead to bankruptcies, foreclosures on homes, suicides, broken families, and serious problems with crime. 34,000 jobs were promised, but 19,000 of these are temporary construction jobs and most of the 15,000 more permanent positions are not well paying ones. At the same time, other businesses, particularly those located close to a casino, stand to lose business and jobs. The amendment that has been approved offers all types of advantages to the group that plans to put in these casinos. Now, an effort needs to be made to go back to the voters - hopefully with the primary next May - to close the loopholes and fix other problems that would cause serious harm to the state and its residents. Read more on the approval of the amendment from The Colmbus Dispatch.
